Training Your German Shepherd
German Shepherds make wonderful companions and family pets; they are loyal, outgoing and intelligent animals, however they do need to be trained.
When it comes to german shepherd training there are a few key things to remember.
German Shepherds, while highly intelligent can also be very stubborn dogs and as such you need to be firm yet rewarding as they will often test the limits of your patience, I’ve often found over the years that sometimes if my shepherd doesn’t want to do something she just won’t do it until she is good and ready – that is, until it suits her.
Consistency as always is a key when it comes to training your German Shepherd, right from the word go make sure you, and all other family members, use the same key words when first teaching your dog something new for example, don’t have one family member say down when you want your dog to lay down while having other say drop to mean the same thing.
Whether you want to train your German Shepherd only as far as the basics; sit when they’re told and come when they’re called or to take it further as a guard dog or to compete in trials etc many of the initial basics are still the same, it’s only as the level of difficulty increases that more time and effort is required, if you do plan on training your Shepherd further not only will they need more teaching but so will you as the owner/trainer. But no matter what level if you and your dog enjoy what you’re doing and learning, and German Shepherds really do love to learn new things, then both you and your dog will have a fun and fulfilling time together.

Training is an important part of owning any dog but it is even more important if you happen to own a working dog breed. These dogs are intelligent, athletic and simply need a job to do so keep that in mind if you decide to bring one of these beautiful animals home with you.
