What You Need To Know In Potty Training Dogs

Let’s face it, dogs are a man’s best friend until they unload a bomb in your living room and you’re stuck with cleaning duties. If you want your residence to be an official no canine poop zone; potty training dogs is what you need to be reading up on. Well, what do you know– you’re reading the simple and fast guide on how to do it right now.

Not a lot of people jump for joy at the mention of house training dogs. As a result, some people who adopt older dogs will be surprised to find them still untrained in ‘doing their business’ outside. While it may be easier to teach puppies to eliminate properly; adult dogs can still be taught correct toilet behavior anytime.

It is much simpler to train a dog how to do something than to guide him in unlearning wrong habits. A lot of times, you will end up feeling frustrated. What you should do instead is to teach him a new way of doing things in place of the former. In this case, its using an outdoor area for relieving himself.

Choose an area for this specific purpose. Around ten to fifteen minutes after meal times, go out and walk him around the designated spot. As you walk back and forth around the spot, clearly speak out a phrase that relates to this particular activity like, ‘go potty’. Say it repeatedly until he finally ‘goes potty’. Praise him enthusiastically right after to let him know he’s done a good job. Do this for a few weeks, always using the same toilet area. Remember house training dogs require consistency in the patterns you set.

Dog accidents can still crop up even when you are in the middle of potty training him. If you catch in the act, quickly stop him and take him outside to finish his business. Give him treats and play with him right after he successfully finishes doing it outside. If you find the mound of poop alone with no dog in sight, do not look for him and start yelling. He will not understand that you are getting mad because of this particular action. Be vigilant to the dog right after his eating time to avoid future similar incidents.

When it happens, immediately clean up the accidents as thoroughly as possible. A deodorizing solution should be applied to remove any residual smell the poop might leave behind. Dogs will sniff out the area and use it again for the same purposes. Keep their cages as small as comfortably possible to aid in potty training dogs. Animals do not relish sleeping in the toilet area so they will restrain eliminating until you can get them outside.

Do not feed him or put water and food inside his cage at night so your sleep will not be disturbed. You can take him outside to discharge in the morning or even after he wakes up from a short cat, I mean, dog nap. When you have succeeded in teaching him how to go out for this particular activity, see to it that leaving the house is as convenient as possible for him. A swinging dog flap installed in your doors or a cage near an open back door will do the job.

Potty training dogs is a priority for the responsible pet owner. It serves as good mental exercise for your dog and your home will be thankful to you for it.

Simple Obedience Techniques for Puppies

by Amy Nutt

Getting a puppy is an exciting time for both the family and the puppy. When a puppy comes into a home, it will be exposed to a variety of new sights, sounds, and places to explore. This can be a very overwhelming and stressful time for the little critter. It is important for the owner to help the puppy adjust and become a well-behaved adult dog. This will involve teaching it to listen to your commands and desensitizing it to new stimuli.

Most puppy behavior experts say the critical learning period for a puppy is up to the age of sixteen weeks. The following are a few simple obedience techniques for training your puppy during this period:

1. Positive reinforcement is a key tool to obedience training. Punishing your puppy will only teach it to fear you and act aggressively to others. Using positive reinforcement as a reward is an essential part of teaching your puppy to be obedient. This can include a food reward, affectionate attention, and a toy as a reward. Praise will make a dog feel loved and more secure.

2. It is important that your puppy becomes desensitized to new environments. Take it for short walks through the streets to help him get use to the new sights, sounds, and people.

3. Reward positive behavior and ignore unwanted behavior during puppy training. Ignore such unwanted behavior as barking, pulling the leash when walking, and jumping on you. Just stand there until it stops and then continue on with the regular routine. When your puppy performs a wanted behavior such as walking next to you or sitting quietly, reward it with praise or a puppy treat. Clicker training is a type of positive reinforcement training that acknowledges that the dog has behaved properly. The “click” sound acknowledges the good behavior. The “click” sound is made as soon as the puppy performs the wanted behavior. As soon as you make the “click” sound, you can reward the puppy with a treat or praise.

4. In order to ensure your puppy does not grow to be an aggressive dog around children, you have to socialize it with children at an early age. When the puppy is around children, praise and reward calm behavior. Allow the puppy to be touched by one child at a time, and don?t force it to be touched as this will only instill fear.

5. A car drive can be a scary time for a puppy. They can vomit, drool, or urinate. Your car should be a comfortable and fun place with familiar items such as its favorite toys and blanket. Take it for a short drive at first and then gradually increase driving time.

6. To teach your puppy to sit, get him to stand in front of you. Show the puppy the treat and let it smell the treat. Move the treat from his front to his hind end. As he watches the treat move to the back end, you should put the treat closer to the floor. The puppy should automatically sit its hind end down. When it does, immediately reward it with the treat and praise.

When properly training your puppy, the reward will not only be a well behaved dog, but you will have a loving and loyal friend.

Puppy Training Tips On Effective Crate Training

by Geraldine Dimarco

Want to hear something crazy? People need vacations. Have you ever had a crazy day wherein you simply wanted to leave everything and spend some time alone to revive yourself? You probably have a boss who begrudgingly gives you only the weekends to relax. What if one day he decides to personally plan a vacation for you, will that help you appreciate him? Don’t you agree that retreats actually help the person live a fuller and a more stress-free life?

Canines operate in a similar fashion. They need to find a secure place to nest in once in a while. It is a deeply primal instinct that goes back several decades, even centuries. A masters responsibility is to lead them into things that we know are good for their well-being. This is an article that aims to do just that with puppy training tips on the often misunderstood but terribly useful crate training.

You hear crate training a puppy and you think it is a cruel and inhumane treatment of dogs. Not really. This is actually a useful dog training method many experts employ. Canines do not sleep in an area which they have previously eliminated on so a crate trained puppy will restrain from soiling himself until he is released from his crate. Make sure the enclosure is small enough. After an hour or two inside the crate, take him out for toilet activities.

Put the enclosure in a room where people gather together. Do not rush the puppy into the whole process; it can be traumatic when done incorrectly. Place his favorite treats and things in and begin to feed him inside the crate. This is your puppy’s special place and you want him to associate the crate with happy and pleasant things. Never use this as a form of punishment.

After a while, he will begin to be comfortable inside. When you feel the time is right, close the crate while you are still in the room. Do not release him the moment he cries or becomes upset. This will tell the puppy that reacting violently will get him what he wants and believe me; no owner would ever want that. Unless he is in pain or wants to potty, wait for the cries to subside before opening the crate.

The next step is getting the puppy so comfortable inside the crate he won’t mind being there alone. Keep his play things inside to occupy him. When you feel the time is right, leave the room for a short period of time and gradually increase it. If you need to leave the house, do not go away for more than four hours. Puppies have not fully developed their bodily functions as well as an adult dog.

Follow these puppy training tips and you will regain a certain freedom most pet owners have forgotten about. A disciplined dog brought up in this method will be easier to schedule for sleeping and potty breaks. Not only that, an actual vacation will be possible now that you can leave your puppy for longer periods of time inside his little nook. After crate training a puppy successfully, you will wonder how you ever managed otherwise.
